Practice: 2.5, Rehearsal: 4. One influential thing that came up tonight in West Side Story rehearsal was the idea of getting into the unique groove of each number. Some of them sit right on the beat, right on top of the beat, or just behind the beat. The mention of this right before the rehearsal went a long way towards bringing the ensemble together. Also, as mentioned in my lesson, “not rushing the rests” also helped (same concept). Finding where the beat “wants” to fall in the music is another one of those intangible style things that makes everything just work. It governs everything else, stylistically.
